First time in Agra? These are the 7 restaurants you should definitely visit
Most trips to Agra span between 24 to 48 hours—just enough time to soak up the beauty of the Taj Mahal, pencil in a trip to Fatehpur Sikhri and, of course, savour the tourist city’s local food culture. Here, we tell you where to go and what to eat
1. The Taj Mahal, Agra
The Taj Mahal, Agra
Perhaps
India's most recognizable building, the Taj Mahal is also the world's most
famous testimony to the power of love. Named after Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite
wife of Emperor Shah Jahan, this most beautiful of mausoleums was begun upon
her death in 1631 and took 20,000 workmen until 1648 to complete.
Incorporating
many elements of Islamic design including arches, minarets, an onion-shaped
dome, and black calligraphy inlaid around the entrance, the Taj Mahal is
largely constructed of white marble. Adding to its splendor are delicate inlaid
floral patterns and precious and semi-precious stones such as jade, lapis
lazuli, diamonds, and mother of pearl.
The best time to visit is either at dawn or dusk when the atmosphere is brilliantly altered by the change in lighting. If possible, try to catch a view of the Taj Mahal's
street eat that you seek out
enthusiastically on day one, and more—here’s where you should eat if you’re in
Agra for 48 hours.
Peshawri
Every holiday has
one of these—an OTT, luxurious, family-style meal at a five-star hotel in the
city that you’re visiting—but dining at Peshawri is truly special. Dubbed ITC
Mughal’s crown jewel, some have gone so far as to say that Peshawar is Agra’s
best luxury restaurant. ITC’s signature Dal Bukhara is on the menu at Peshawri,
of course, and we recommend complementing it with the restaurant’s assortment
of kebabs and tikkas, cooked in clay tandoors. The Raan, visitors say, is a
must-try.
